There is ground crew which includes commercial services, customer services, security, administration, engineers, air traffic controllers, and the cabin crew which include air hostesses, stewards, pilots. You can jointhe industry straight after 10+2, though most airlines prefer their staff to be graduates. Airlines place advertisements in newspapers and on their websites to announce their requirements. Short-listed candidates are called for a preliminary interview followed by another round to check their physical attributes, confidence, communication skills and grooming. Airhostesses or air stewards can be promoted to assistant manager of in-flight department and further director of in flight services at the headquarter level. TEACHING & EDUCATION SECTOR

A tremendous change is sweeping education sector, oneof the largest of all professions in India. The primaryreasons for the change are (a) corporatisation of education ki.e., entry of companies & big industrial houses in school \sector (b) IT/computers in education (c) teaching abroad? gaining popularity (d) privatization of education and entryof foreign institutions after implementation of GATT (General Agreement in Trade & Tariffs). Due to these, salaries have gone updramatically with reputed public schoolsand private universities offering Rs.50,000 to Rs.1.5 lakh per month. The median salary is around Rs.30,000 to Rs.40,000. For entry into school sector, a Bachelor's degree and B.Ed is a must and Master's + B.Ed desirable. To teach at college level colleges, one has to clear UGC's NET (National Eligibility Test) exam and then apply to colleges. A doctorate (Ph.D) would help. For professional institutes, one should be a post graduate i.e. M.Tech (for engineering institutes), MBA (for management institutes); a Ph.D would again help. A positive side of teaching career is that one can plan time better. Typical school hours are from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm and colleges 8:00 am to 3:00 or 3:30 pm though the work can be tiring & trying. It can also become monotonous if one is not innovative. NTT, JBT, ETE are qualifications to be taken if one is interested in teaching primary classes. These can be done after Class XII (any stream).

Beyond teaching, teachers, after gaining subject experience, can look at the following :

  • Content Development with IT companies like Jaypee who are developing software for schools, and curriculum packages.
  • Online tutoring: Organizations like Liqvid, Career Launcher are providing online tuitions to kids in the US, the UK and other countries
  • Trainers: Wipro, Microsoft, and Planetvidya organize a number of teacher training programs where they need subject experts also. (d) Publishing: Writing books, articles for papers, etc. (e) Developing Course Material for Competitive Exams (f) Parallel Education: Running coaching institutions.

Fly Out

  • The US needs thousands of teachers. China & Malaysia also want our teachers. Why Indians? (a) We speak the clearest English in the world, (b) We are a very competitive race; we become more dedicated when we are working outside India. Hence, one would find a scenario after three-four years wherein somebody could be going to Britain for a 3 years assignment or fly off to Malaysia for a two-year stint. So all in all it is a career that needs to be looked at seriously.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

GLOBALISATION and opening up of economy have led to increased trade among countries. A number of MNCs which have set up their base in India need language specialists as do call centres and transcription companies. Tourism, leisure, entertainment, public relations, mass communication, and publication are other sectors where these specialists work. The 'hybrids' i.e. individuals trained in both i.e. functional areas like marketing, finance, law, insurance, engineer, etc and any one language are in great demand. In recent years, the need to translate reports, contracts and various business documents for the MNCs has grown manifolds. Translation centers are doing this work for these companies. The job of interpretation involves a lot of trust as it is only the interpreter who knows the crux of an on-going conversation. They need a high level of proficiency of language also as the work has to be done instantly. A better than average general knowledge and familiarity with new terms would definitely help one in being successful. One can go in for a graduation course, a five-year integrated course or diploma courses. Part time and evening options are also available. A number of institutes have started offering their students additional language courses. Starting salaries in organizations range from Rs.35,000 to Rs.45,000 per month for a proficient person. INSURANCE

The waves of liberalization have hit the insurance sector and more than twelve multinational companies are now present in India. Earlier, life insurance was basically projected as a means of tax savings. The risk element involved in loss of life was never broached. However, all that is going to change. The pension and medical products are expected to see limitless growth. Let us understand the various kinds of jobs that are available. In the first place we have actuaries - people who create mathematical models to price new insurance products, calculate risks and cost of insuring. Second is surveyors - individuals who go to the scene of an accident/fire/theft and estimate the loss. Third is agents/sales professionals - people who seek and service clients. In fact, in developed countries, jokes abound about insurance sales people - who are chipkoos and don't go away till one buys an insurance product from them. Insurance companies like LIC and GIC recruit graduates (through a test) and train them on the job. Now private companies, particularly multinationals, would scout for trained professionals. A good numeracy skill is required to be successful in an insurance career. A major advantage is that it does not require any investment to start work. Another advantage is that insurance sales does not have time or territorial restraints. The earning is in proportion to the effort put in. You get 25% of first year's premium (on the policy sold) as commission. The agent further gets a renewal commission at the rate of V/2.% of the premium for the second and third years and at 5% for all subsequent premiums received under the policy. Companies like LIC now provide various facilities to its professional agents. For example, an agent who is a member of the Chairman's or Zonal Manager's Club, is provided with car, telephone, computer, office maintenance expenses and cheap housing loan. In case, the agent wants to join the company, he has the opportunity to become a development officer after passing a test and can rise to the position of branch manager or divisional manager.

Photographers, like artists, have a wide variety of choices as far as subjects are concerned. The choices, in fact, are as varied and diverse as life itself. From photojournalism (which deals with lending a visual touch to news reporting) to wild life photography, fashion photography, photo portraits, still-life photography and mood photography, there's a comprehensive list of options to choose from. There are two routes into this career - through training, and working. A course or formal training opens options of working with magazines or newspapers. Technical training and information cannot make you 'see' things unless you have that inner ability, and an intelligent, curious and perceptive mind. Establishing oneself as a professional photographer is difficult and the climb is hard and long, and the financial returns not very satisfactory in the beginning. RADIO JOCKEY

priety Zinta did it in Salaam Nameste and Vidya Balan in "Lage Raho Munnabhai". And how can we forget "Bhaiyon aur Behano" style of Ameen Sayani the golden voice of yesteryears - who began his radio career in 1951 with Radio Ceylon and later kept millions engrossed with "Binaca Geet Mala" on AIR. Today he anchors a show on RED FM in addition to producing a number for the network. According to him "An RJ (radio jockey) is the mouthpiece of the station. He has to take the burden of representing the right, as well as the dark side of the station." A radio jockey is a person who hosts a radio talk show, where he/she selects the music to be played and also interacts with the audience via telephone. The last decade has brought about a sea change in the way people look at entertainment and the media is racing to provide them with just what is being asked for. The radio boom - that was seen in the form of transformation from AM channels to FM channels- witnessed a new industry rising. This gave opportunities to various private players such as Radio Mirchi, Red FM, Radio City etc. As such there has been resurgence in the popularity of Radio. Radio jockeys often work within tight schedule constraints, which can be physically and mentally stressful. However, as Jayshree, who is an RJ for the past six years, feels that the intangible rewards - personal and professional contacts, creative work, and the satisfaction of becoming widely known far outweigh the disadvantages of irregular and often unpredictable hours, work pressure, and disrupted personal lives. One should be able to evolve a style of his own. Watch all other stations, and listen to all others like BBC, CNN, FM, not to copy them but to avoid any duplications.

Training

  • There are a host of crash courses in voice-overs or mixing run by professionals in the field. At present there are two ways of gaining entry into this field. Give an audition at AIR which holds auditions for RJs every 3 months for which you have to enrol yourself. Notice for the audition is put on a board at the AIR building. The programme coordinator holds the auditions; you might be asked to do a mock interview with a celebrity or a mock dial-in show etc. Out of around 300 hopefuls who give auditions, only 6 are chosen. Those selected undergo training for 2 months where they learn everything from a CD player to mixers and DATS (Digital Audio Technology) etc. Another option for entry is to approach the software producer companies which produces radio programmes for the client. Software producer generally prefer people with 2-3 years experience. Sponsored programmes pay you between Rs.2,500 to Rs.4,000 per show.

SOCIAL WORK

There is a saying: "If you light a lantern for others, your own path is brightened". This holds true for all social workers who, while working for underprivileged and poor people, derive a lot of joy and happiness from their job. Social work is a fast growing profession which entails helping individuals to find solutions to problems with which theycannot cope on their own. Social work which was earlier thought of as a prerogative of few visionaries, is now attracting a growing number of young people. There are mainly two reasons for this change. Firstly, there is an increasing awareness among young people to work for the down-trodden. Secondly, the job opportunities for social workers are multiplying because of massive inflow of funds for development programmes by NGOs, the UNS corporates, and central and state governments. After Class XII students can take up a bachelor's degree in social work (BSW) or even Sociology and can later pursue Master's in Social Work (MSW). Students are given field training which equips them with practical experience in rural development, adult literacy, preventive health, food and nutrition, women and child welfare, environment conservation, community and labour welfare, etc. A fresh graduate usually starts with a salary package of Rs.20,000 per month and a post-graduate at around Rs.25,000 to Rs.40,000. After a few years' experience, one can draw a salary around Rs.60,000 to Rs.80,000 per month.

But, if you work in an area of your interest or the one in which you perform naturally, then work would seem like play and you would be very successful.
